The travel bug bit author Peter O'Neil at a young age, propelling him out of his comfort zone and into a life of teaching and globetrotting. When the middle-school math teacher accepts a job at an international school in New Delhi, he embraces the opportunity to immerse himself in life in one of India's largest cities.
But a chance encounter with five cousins from the Kassana family at a lesser-known tourist site in Delhi offers O'Neil the opportunity to step away from the comforts of expatriate living and experience life in rural India.
In their early twenties, the five men are members of the Gurjar caste - one of the lower castes - and barely able to communicate in English. Somehow, despite the significant differences in language, culture, and socioeconomic status, O'Neil and the cousins travel together to some of the country's most rural villages, experiencing plenty of adventures along the way.
Documenting the country's mosaic of color and contradiction, O'Neil introduces listeners to India in all its splendor and suffering, taking them beyond the common sightseer spots and stereotypes to the heart and soul of the subcontinent.
Chai Chapati My Time in the Punjab (Audible Audio Edition) Peter O'Neil Books
This is a great overview of one man's journey through the Punjab. I felt like I was with Peter as he takes us off the beaten path to befriend a group of locals who took him under their wing. There are thousands of travel books on India but I felt like this short book gave me a much better sense of the people and the kindness they extend to outsiders.Product details

Chai Chapati My Time in the Punjab (Audible Audio Edition) Peter O'Neil Books Reviews
Fun read.
I found it easy to be swept along by the gentle flow of this book with its interesting and detailed observations on Indian life. The author moved outside of the confines of his elite teaching environment to meet and travel with young Indian friends. His account of these travels was interspersed, sometimes a bit bumpily, with descriptions of interesting ideas and sites he had encountered. His list of "takeaways" at the conclusion of the book was fascinating, especially the one noting the vast difference between Hindu and Abrahamic philosophies with regard to helping others.
I am purchasing 2 more copies to give to my travel-loving reader friends! This delightful book takes the reader on a lighthearted journey into the countryside of India, revealing back roads of customs and cultural nuances that can only be discovered by hanging with the locals. Descriptions of the scenery, people, food, and happenings were vivid and compelling. This heartwarming and sometimes hilarious memoir was a perfect escape that was far too brief! It left me wanting to read the sequel. More importantly, it gave me insight into the lessons of India and added India to my travel bucket list!
Chai and Chapati is a delightful, educational, and sensitive glimpse into life in Punjab, a region in northern India. It was written by an American who spent a couple of years teaching math in a high school in New Delhi, Through happenstance, and presumably some personal charm or whatever, O’Neil had the rare opportunity to exchange visits (by bus, car, and train) with a group of Punjabi citizens (5 cousins) he met in a park in Delhi. The author doesn’t miss a thing and gives his take on the role that religion, gender (inequality), caste and, above all, food and chai (chai, chai) play in the lives of average Punjabi. Would that this book have been longer and contain some photographs. The cover photo is stunning.
I would like to visit India one of these days. This was a good introduction for me. Peter enjoyed his adventures and passed this on to me as I read. I enjoyed his details about the foods and the weddings he attended. I could picture the vibrant colours and the dresses of the people. His details about the customs were interesting and I ended up thinking that I would enjoy this part of India. Thank you Peter and I would recommend this book.
I loved this book! The simplicity of the message resonated throughout Peter's journey in India. What a fantastic, albeit too short, memoir of a 2 year cultural learning experience. I encourage the author to document other of his life experiences as he is a talented and well spoken writer who engages the reader right away!
I really enjoyed Peter's memoir of his travels with locals in India. By describing his experiences with vivid detail, he imparts a clear picture of what village life is like for a group of five delightful cousins. Peter is insightful without being judgmental, allowing readers to draw their own ideas about cultural traditions and ideologies which may be very different from their own. I felt like I was traveling alongside Peter with each turn of the page. I also appreciated his "takeaways," summarized at the end of his memoir. I purchased ghee for the first time, something I would not have done without reading Peter's yummy descriptions of the local food he enjoyed and the people he ate it with. This is a refreshing memoir of an expat's experiences abroad because, unlike most expatriate memoirs, it's all about India and not about him. I highly recommend you read this book for a great way to travel to one part of India from the comfort of your own home!
