It's been some months since widow Annie Dawson inherited her grandparents' Victorian home in Stony Point, Maine. She'd left her daughter and grandchildren behind in Texas and moved, at least temporarily, into the old seaside house. She reconnected with childhood friend Alice MacFarlane, and she became a member of the community Hook and Needle craft club, too. By the time of this episode, she still had yet to make a clear decision about making a permanent move to this town.

Each one of these casual "Attic Mysteries" is just that: a puzzle surrounding something that Annie finds in the old attic. This time, it's a photo album that seems to date from 20 years ago. Some of the shots show a mysterious boy lurking in the background. Annie wants to figure out who he is or was. When she does so, she has no idea that one of her new friends knows more about the boy than she is publicly admitting.

And each book in the series is written by a different author. As a result, they aren't totally consistent in their approaches. This one spends a lot more time fleshing out minor characters and doesn't dwell solely on Annie, as the others do. It leans more toward the Christian fiction genre than the other episodes I've read so far. The Midwestern author also mentions in passing the Chicago Bears and the home improvement store Menards, based in Wisconsin. Though both are noted as relating to tourists arriving in Stony Point, the reality is that New Englanders wouldn't care about either entity. Many visitors to Maine come from other states in the Northeast anyway, and not from the Midwest.

At the same time, this book is much more suspenseful than the others in the series. Readers know the identity of the culprit before the main characters do. As a result, they may feel a bit of fear as they turn the pages, worrying about whether everything will work out in the end. It's a more engaging read, in that respect.

This series has a web site that offers each volume in order, on a book club basis. "Photos" of three of the main characters appear on the site. I'm glad I didn't see them when I first started reading these books, because the images don't match my impressions of the individuals. Access the site at your own risk! Otherwise, this can be a mildly entertaining mystery series to spend time with.

The Photo Album Annie Attic Mysteries Marlene Chase 9781596353053 Books Reviews

The Photo Album is an Annie’s Attic Mystery by Marlene Chase. It is the third in this series. Annie Dawson has come to Stony Point to go to her Grandmother’s funeral and to go through her Grandmother’s house and decide what to do with all of her things. It is taking longer than Annie intended but she is nowhere near making a decision about all the things she is finding than she was the day she arrived. As she comes to some of the things in the attic, a question is formed and a mystery needs to be solved. Using the help from the Hook and Needle Club, she sets out to figure out the mystery.
This time it was a picture of a young boy in the background of some of the pictures that she questioned. Annie asked around and no one knew who he was. Finally she goes to back journal records and finds the notification of the death of the young boy. She now has his name and how he died; but several questions still remain. One is why no one seems to know him? What really happened to him?
In the midst of her questioning about the young man, an antique dealer comes to town. Why is he here? Does he have anything to do with the boy? Someone in town knows something but why isn’t he/she telling everything she knows?
This is a great book and easy to read. It is fairly short and can be read in one sitting.
This was a great, light summer read. Everyone in our book club enjoyed it. It was recommended by one of my sisters who knows the author personally. I will read more of her books.
It is good easy reading. The story line is good and leaves you wanting to read the next in the series.

Great
Loving this series.
Although it was obvious to me from the beginning who the criminal was, I enjoyed reading this one. It was also great to have a more thorough description of the attic. I was amazed that Annie could be so dense about the true character of the man who just showed up one day. But I suppose that the fact that he had worked for her grandmother had something to do with her lack of judgement. Fortunately a couple of other good friends were not so taken in by his charming demeanor. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
